Frequently Asked Questions

General Services

People Who Care’s services are provided free of charge and made possible by the generosity of individuals, businesses, and grants. Our volunteers do NOT accept payment, tips, or reimbursement for assisting you. It is our purpose and pleasure to do so! If you wish to make a tax-deductible donation in support of People Who Care’s work, you may send a check or donate on our website.

Our enrollment process has four steps:

  1. Call us. When you call, we will set up at time for a phone interview to help you learn more about our services and determine if you may qualify. This initial call must be from you – not someone on your behalf.
  2. Phone interview. This is the first step in assessing whether you qualify for People Who Care’s assistance. This call takes about 45 minutes and includes basic questions about your health and any assistive devices you may need.
  3. In-person interview at your home. One of our friendly volunteer intake coordinators will contact you to set up a time to come to your home. The volunteer will meet with you and gather information about your situation and the different ways we may assist you. This visit lasts one to two hours.
  4. Application review. Following the in-person interview, your application will be reviewed by our Program Manager. We will then notify you regarding whether we are able to assist you.

The entire enrollment process takes several weeks.  Once approved, you may begin scheduling services.

Once enrollment has been approved, a volunteer will be assigned to help you with grocery shopping at the store or they can pick-up an order you’ve placed and deliver to you, after you have completed the phone interview.

As soon as you have completed the in-person interview and your request for enrollment has been approved, you can request transportation services. Since the enrollment process can take up to three weeks and we are NOT able to accommodate “Next Day” requests, we ask that you please plan accordingly.

Our enrollment criteria are as follows:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must reside in Chino Valley, Prescott, Prescott Valley or Dewey (east of SR 169).
  • You must be unable to drive due to physical limitations, including medical, vision, hearing, and age-related challenges. These limitations may be temporary, i.e., you are unable to drive for several weeks after knee surgery.
  • You must be living independently (not in an assisted living community). You may still qualify for our services if you live with a spouse or family member.

To qualify for transportation services:

  • You must be able to enter and exit your home – and a vehicle with minimal assistance.
  • You may use a cane or walker
  • You do not have a full-size oxygen tank

No, we do not provide any monetary assistance.

Yes!  Our medical supply loan closet in Chino Valley is open to everyone. The loan is free of charge, but we do ask that you return the item if/when you no longer need it.  Available items will vary.

Transportation Services

Our volunteer transportation services are restricted to “essential” destinations only. Such as medical or healthcare appointments, legal appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, social services, support groups, and to nursing homes to visit a family member.  We are not able to transport our Neighbors to “non-essential” or leisure destinations, such as hair salons, restaurants, and other people’s homes.

No.  At this time, we do not have a vehicle to transport people in their wheelchairs. Rides are provided using our volunteers’ personal vehicles and are not set-up to accommodate wheelchairs.

Minimal assistance is providing a steady arm momentarily. Volunteers are not able to lift or pull. If a person can be transferred unassisted from their walker or wheelchair in and out of a vehicle, they can be transported.

No.  Assisted living facilities typically provide transportation for their residents.

No.  We provide services only to those who are unable to drive due to physical limitations such as age-related challenges, vision loss, physical disabilities and illnesses, physician restrictions, and recent surgery.

We do not provide rides for those who are able to drive but do not own a vehicle, have a vehicle that is not running, or have lost their license for reasons other than physical disability or age-related limitations.

Yes, we certainly do! However, because our enrollment process may take several weeks, we recommend that you contact us to get the process started well in advance of your surgery date. That way, we can provide the services you need when the time comes.

People Who Care does not own any vehicles.  All transportation is provided by our volunteers using their personal vehicles. With this in mind, please let us know if you are unable to get in and out of certain types of vehicles, so that we may accommodate you.

Other Services

No.  Our volunteers assist with non-medical services only.  If you require the assistance of a nurse or more in-depth caregiving, we suggest speaking with your medical provider. They can recommend a home health agency or home care agency to assist with your specific needs.

No.  Our volunteers do not provide cooking, cleaning, or yard care services.

Volunteering

We would be so excited to have you! Volunteering with People Who Care is flexible and easy. We host an informational volunteer orientation at our office on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  (If you plan to attend, please call our office to confirm.)

Sign up here

At this presentation you will learn all about People Who Care, what we do in the community, and the MANY ways you can choose to be part of it!  If you decide you would like to volunteer with People Who Care, you will fill out an application form and provide a copy of your driver’s license and auto insurance card.  Background checks are required – once this is completed, you can begin volunteering with us.

If you have any specific questions, please call our Prescott office to speak with our volunteer coordinator.

Most personal auto insurance policies cover car passengers. As part of our enrollment process, we will need proof of your own vehicle insurance.

Donations

People Who Care does have a Medical Loan Equipment Loan Closet, so we accept donations of many assistive medical products. Please contact us to share what you have to donate.

We of course take any monetary donations which help our organization to operate and provide many other services. Please click on the donate button at the top of the page to learn more.
